Tactical vests also differ in design. Modern tactical vests are generally durable and lightweight. Early vests were often made of leather and canvas, but these absorbent materials would increase weight in rain or wading. Later, high-quality nylon webbing was used. Tactical vests are very tightly sewn, usually with high-tensile strength thread, allowing for a very high load-bearing capacity. The way items are carried on tactical vests is also very reasonable, avoiding interference with other equipment and movements.

The design of tactical vests also differs. For soldiers on offensive missions, they typically carry large amounts of reserve ammunition for their primary weapon, grenades, as well as pistols, knives, radios, personal first-aid supplies, and tools (for breaching doors, demolition, etc.).
